The storm centered imagery presented on this page are generated based on storm center files provided by NRL(Naval Research Laboratory at Monterey). These files are updated whenever new information about active storms become available, and the imagery is updated shortly after reciept of these files.
WindSat, the first space borne polarimetric microwave radiometer, was developed by the Naval Research Laboratory under sponsorship of the U.S. Navy and NPOESS. For additional information on WindSat, please visit IPO WindSat web site. The ocean vector wind retrievals shown here were retrieved from polarimetric brightness temperature measurements (Stokes parameters) using the WindSat-1 model function, which was developed by the Ocean Surface Winds Team at the NESDIS Office of Research and Applications. The latest and previous links display the current and past wind vector images for the selected storm. The ambiguity link plots all the ambiguities resulting from the wind retrieval process, with 4 being the maximum number of ambiguities.
Please Note:
These wind data are derived from a preliminary wind vector retrieval algorithm, developed at NOAA/NESDIS, that has not yet been fully validated. The current "rainflag" does not flag all rain contaminated retrievals; more comprehensive rainflags are being pursued. Also, this web site is not maintained with 24x7 support.
